Do you have current or former clients who have faced medical collections on their credit reports? The three major credit bureaus—TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian—have announced some really helpful new changes to how medical debt is reported.
Better yet—these updates will impact approximately 70% of medical collections, which means your clients who have been held back by medical debt may now be in a much better position to get a mortgage!
Two changes became effective July 1, 2022:
First, paid medical collection debt will no longer be included on credit reports. So, if your current client has recently paid off medical bills, or your past client has resolved medical debt since you last worked together, they should reach out to me to take a look at their situation.
Second, credit bureaus are now extending from six months to a full year the time period before unpaid medical collection debt appears on your client's report. This means your client has 12 full months in which they can go ahead and apply for a home loan—and hopefully resolve medical debt issues—before that debt will impact their credit history.
Finally, in the first half of 2023, medical debt collection accounts under a pre-defined minimum threshold (to be determined later this year, but at least $500) will no longer be included on credit reports. So, that old emergency room bill of $397 won't count against your client any more, beginning next year.
If you or your clients have debt questions—medical or otherwise—I can help by running simulations to see what will impact credit scores as debt is addressed, and which debt to tackle first. Call me today. ... See MoreSee Less
